Lurch, bump, flutter, you know that feeling? The stirring of feathers, the awakening of something that’s been resting in your heart for some time stretching its wings.
Demanding to be let out, to fly, to be free.
It’s called creativity.
Don’t – be still my heart
Things that flutter in the heart, need to be allowed to stretch their wings.
Creativity needs to be let to fly free, we need to open the cage door and shoo it out into the world. We’re going to be wondering what it will encounter how it will manage, but we have to believe that it will be fine.
Every blog post we create, each photo we take, every painting where we touch brush to canvas, words written penned on paper or computer, room redecorated, beautiful meal put together is a celebration of our creativity.
We had a beautiful light blue bird in a cage when I was young, it fluttered and chirped, sang when the sun shone through the bars of the cage, the door was always open during the day, it never flew away, spending time sitting on the top where the cage hung from it’s stand. We also had a ginger colored cat who eyed that beautiful blue bird with longing just because it moved.
When I got up in the morning the cat would be waiting for me, following first, and then leading me down the stairs to the kitchen, my sleepy feet slowly making their way. Her encouraging meows, purrs and chirps were meant to push me towards her goal of being fed. There were many times when she was frustrated by my meanderings, cold feet and sleepy head making me too slow for her stride.
The cat would lurk in the morning shadows, always watching. She would burst out of the dark corners of the house circling feet with warm fur weaving among the chair legs, wandering and returning when the fridge door was opened, observing from beyond the reach of the light over the kitchen sink.
Demanding and expecting to have the attention before the bird.
The cat is like life, it’s always there.
The beautiful blue bird is creativity, perching on a stick in the cage snuggled into the corner, out of the way, wings fluttering, beating against the bars, hoping for the moment when you open the cage door and set it free.
When life gets so busy that you can’t dream, think, or believe that there will be time to allow creativity to fly is like the moment when the ginger-colored cat would turn from her empty dish where she was crouching on the cold kitchen floor, and cast a gaze over the bird cage that made the bird that was like creativity shiver.
Her jealous golden eyes flicking over the feathers as if she was dreaming of how they would taste, dry and stiff in her mouth, wings stilled, heart slowing to nothingness.
Our routine of the cage door opening, the bird free to move around, making it’s way to the top to flutter and spread it’s wings made her want to devour it every morning.
But only until something else caught her attention.
That’s life, wanting all of your attention while creativity perches in your heart quietly waiting for its moment to soar.
I hope that you manage to make time in your life to be creative, to allow that beautiful bird to fly, spreading its wings and that life will lose interest in devouring it.
Like Maya Angelou said so beautifully, “you can’t use up creativity, the more you use the more you have.”
I’m encouraging you to let an entire flock of beautiful blue birds fly in your heart today.
How about sharing your tips on how to find time to let your creativity soar in this busy world.

We’ve all had those days, even weeks when it seems that life comes together all at one time, fun days, interesting hours when time flies past so fast it’s a blur, and you settle into bed at night wondering if you managed to accomplish everything that you had planned, knowing that you didn’t, but that it would still be there the next day.
Some of the lovely hours were spent photographing my first engagement shoot the other day, my beautiful niece is getting married next summer to an amazing young man, and it’s beyond exciting for our families.
Can you tell?
The young couple managed to pause for a moment between travelling to other destinations and be captured for posterity.
The sun shone when it wasn’t supposed to, laughter spilled among the wet grass growing at the base of the grape vines, the farm dogs ran rampant, photo bombing us at every opportunity, feet were soaked, and the camera clicked with joy.
A day to keep in the heart forever.
One door closes
They say one door closes and another one opens, Laura from Simple and Serene Living and I have decided that the time has come for our Aspiring Bloggers Face Book group to finish up. We want to thank all of you who joined in and participated, it was fun, we learnt a lot, explored, grew, and we hope that all of you did so too. It’s time to move onto other projects and this upcoming one is close to my heart.

Today I’m launching Rural, a new online magazine . Rural is about how you live, not where you live, it’s about celebrating moments, and capturing beauty where you find it. It’s been an intense couple of weeks, the hours spent coordinating the amazing work of bloggers, writers, and photographers that I’ve been so fortunate to meet online have come together in this online publication today.
These wings have been fluttering against my heart for some time now…. and now they are free to fly.
