Living up here it never gets old, it’s early morning, and in order to gather up as much cool air as possible I sneak downstairs opening all of the doors and windows before 5 am.
The Boo has gotten us up early once again, I’m blurry eyed, but awake. The front door swings open soundlesly, I don’t want to alert the cat who is busy snuffling his food in the kitchen, or my sleeping husband.
Standing in my favorite turquoise house coat, cool draft drifting over my freezing bare feet, trying to focus my eyes on something just at the edge of the yard…it’s light brown, and gliding gracefully…so no, it’s not the bear, or the cougar, it’s a deer. It calmly steps over the sprinkler in my neighbours house, wanders across the street, and starts to meander it’s way through the kids toys left scattered over the front lawn.
I’ll tell you the truth, this is never going to get old, even if the deer start to eat my beloved hosta’s, it’s always going to amaze me that in those quiet moments of the early moment, when we least expect it, we get to share our world here with wildlife.
I am never going to get tired of seeing the dark shadow of a raven swooping over my head, listening to the swoosh as it’s wings beat against the air. Or waking to trilling bird song that is so loud it might be a radio playing. The mooing of the cows, a donkey’s bray, and the sounds of long string of geese making their way over a field.
That feeling of being blessed, to live exactly where we have wanted to for so long, is not getting old, and I hope that it never does.
Later that night after the heat of the day starts to subside, the windows open to the dark, we sit in our matching recliners watching TV, [I know, LOL] in the living room legs splayed out, bodies played out, but garden tidy, plants watered. I’m looking out the floor length windows toward the road, as another brown shape streaks by.
A deer I call out, surprised, galloping up the road!
Of course my husband doesn’t believe me…I mean who would. But yes, after he went outside and looked up our long street, there was the young buck, [the deer silly, not my guy] hoofing it down the middle of the road.
I’m so loving living here.
