Of all the seasons Autumn, I’ve loved you the most. Don’t tell the others, you’ll only make them jealous, bitter, less joyful when it’s their turn.
Your colorful days that glow and light up the late afternoons with fluttering leaves gracefully drifting into piles makes it easy to choose you over the coldness of Winter.
Against Summer with its blatant heat, and Spring with it’s mercurial moods, yes Autumn, you are my favorite.
You, the middle child, the sensitive one, trying to accommodate us in every way, willing to give us as much color and texture in the landscape as you can the painter of light on leaves.
Allowing both Summer and Winter their time to shine, letting them overlap into your season without complaint. You Autumn are my favorite.
Now shush, don’t drop more leaves in your haste to greet Winter and allow it’s cold to penetrate our bones. Hang onto what you have left, the weakening sun, the skies that grace us with brilliant sunsets in tones of raspberry and peach layered into clouds of fluffy fog.
The yellows, goldens, amber of fading life, the bleaching fields, the browning trees are a beauty unto themselves.
Stay a while longer Autumn, linger in our hazy smoke filled sky, rest your head on the mountain peaks, and feel the prickle of stubble in the shorn fields as you run your hand over them.
Give me more days to bike the country roads before they are wetted by the melting frost, or covered with snow for too many months. Allow me more time to marvel over the silhouettes of the hawks keening above, contrasting against the grey sky in their search for sunlight and sustenance.
For you alone are my favorite and always will be Autumn….

When Autumn’s Caramel toffee crunch starts to turn into the steely resolve of Winter it can be hard to deal with it. It’s easy to love Autumn at the beginning of the season, it’s like new love, all colorfully bursting with beauty.
